Steve Is Awesome
Back in 2006 some anonymous 'person' wrote the following libeling Steve Mallett accusing him of theft which they didn't correct after it being shown to be completely false (also see the comments to this post).
This post was then promoted to Digg, which was the style at the time, creating the first episode of the madness of crowds in social media. Digg created the bury feature in response.
Steve was using a software package, written by others, called Pligg which did have some copied CSS, to which the collective response was "ohhhhhhhhhhh".
For posterity's sake here's the original text:
It seems Steve Mallett, (writer for O’Reilly) has copy-and-pasted digg's CSS and HTML directly into his own digg clone sites. Then decided to SPAM O'Reilly sites on digg. Don’t worry, I have proof:

As you can see he didn’t even take the time to remove all digg references. Not only that but he uses the same comment boxes, and images (copyrighted by digg) for his profile tabs.

Maybe you didn't see the post a few weeks back where a spanish site released the source-code for digg?

I think you are confusing two very different things. If some authors or MANY many authors want to clone digg, del.icio.us, or any other website they want you should be encouraging them to do so.
If you think that the "original" websites are somehow sacrosanct you should probably sit down and ask yourself about people's dedication to Linux (a clone of System V and previous Unix systems), Movable Type (Blogger), etc. etc.
Cloning == good, taking HTML/CSS without permission == bad. And on that point I completely agree with you.
Steve didn't do anything wrong. He didn't steal diggs code, he used pligg.com, which is an open source version of digg basically. Look at http://www.pligg.com/css/meneame1.css if you don't believe me. That's where he got his stuff. I think you owe Steve an apology.
digg is great, ive seen so many of these digg duplicates and none of them will ever become better because digg is way ahead of them. so no one should worry about it because all of these sites will eventually die down. also digg is the one with over 100,000 registered members these sites would probably have less than 100.
